Focus on Expanding Sharia Banking, Maybank Indonesia Inaugurates New Branch In Samarinda

 

Samarinda, 17 June 2021 – Sharia Business Unit (“UUS”) PT Maybank Indonesia, Tbk. ("Maybank Indonesia") today opened a Sharia branch office (“KCS”) in Samarinda, East Kalimantan. The inauguration of KCS Samarinda also marks the presence of the 19th UUS Maybank Indonesia KCS.

The virtual inauguration was carried out by Romy Buchari, Group Head Shariah Banking Maybank Indonesia and Harryanto Pramono, Head of Community Distribution Maybank Indonesia. In addition, the Mayor of Samarinda, Dr H. Andi Harun ST. SH. Msi, Regional Head of the Financial Services Authority ("OJK") for East Kalimantan Province, Made Yoga Sudharma, and Head of Bank Indonesia Representative Office for East Kalimantan Province, Tutuk S.H. Cahyono, was also present at the inauguration of KCS Maybank Indonesia.

In his remarks, Romy Buchari, Group Head Shariah Banking, said, "We are optimistic that with  KCS Maybank Indonesia in Samarinda, we can expand our Shariah financial services coverage to cater both for individual and corporate customers in Samarinda city and its surroundings. In addition, we are also targeting to increase the contribution and positive growth of Maybank Indonesia's Sharia business portfolio to the Sharia banking sector at the regional and national levels."

Based on data from Islamic Banking Statistics[1], as of December 2020, the Islamic banking industry in Samarinda city showed positive growth. Third-Party Funds increased by IDR 694 billion to IDR 4.19 trillion compared to 2019 of IDR 3.50 trillion. Meanwhile, in terms of financing, it increased by Rp. 363 billion to Rp. 2.79 trillion compared to 2019 of Rp. 2.42 trillion.

Harryanto Pramono, as Group Head Community Distribution of Maybank Indonesia, also said, "The growth potential of the Sharia banking sector in Samarinda City is promising, along with the potential for economic growth in the East Kalimantan region, which is contributed through the processing and mining industries. We hope that our Sharia finance solutions can play a role in advancing the industrial and trade sectors in the East Kalimantan region, as well as increasing the market share of UUS Maybank Indonesia in the Sharia banking sector in the region."

The opening of the Samarinda KCS is a form of continuation of Maybank Indonesia's commitment to implementing the Sharia First strategy, which has been implemented since 2014. This strategy focuses on efforts to promote Islamic financial products and solutions to the broader community.

In the first quarter of 2021, UUS Maybank Indonesia was able to record growth in Third Party Funds by consistently implementing this strategy, grew by 13.2%, to Rp29.5 trillion compared to the same period the previous year, supported by low-cost funds (CASA). Sharia with a growth of 42.6%.

In addition, the total assets of UUS Maybank Indonesia grew by 12.9% to Rp35.9 trillion or 21.96% of the total assets of the Bank (Individual) as of March 31, 2021, an increase compared to the same period the previous year.

In addition, UUS Maybank Indonesia recently held a virtual discussion forum entitled Maybank Indonesia Shariah Thought Leaders Forum with the theme 'From Niche to Mainstream: Accelerating Shariah Economic and Finance in the Digital Era' continuation of the Shariah First strategy. This forum brings together regulators, national and international Sharia finance experts, digital banking experts and Sharia business practitioners to discuss the development of the Sharia economy in the midst of encouraging digital transformation and encouraging the growth of Sharia supply chain business in Indonesia.

UUS Maybank Indonesia has played an active role in several strategic projects in the country, including as the first bank in the country to provide financing facilities for procuring Covid-19 vaccines to PT Bio Farma (Persero) USD 185 million or equivalent to Rp 2.68 trillion.
