Maybank awards inaugural ASEAN-Maybank Scholarships

Three scholarship recipients from Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar honoured at the 55th ASEAN Day

Maybank has made its inaugural award of three ASEAN-Maybank Scholarships (AMS) under its 2022 programme – the first ever scholarship programme by a regional organisation in partnership with the ASEAN Secretariat.

The scholarships were presented to the three students from Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar at the 55th ASEAN Day celebration in Jakarta today by H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi, Secretary-General of ASEAN and Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Chairman of Maybank.

Speaking at the event, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa extended his congratulations to the inaugural recipients and said that Maybank was honoured to partner with the ASEAN Secretariat to finalise the intake for the scholarship programme.

“When we first introduced the programme in April this year, we were very pleased with the response it received, recording a total of 2,412 applications from all 10 ASEAN member states. Today, the first three recipients of the AMS will pave way to a more informed and inclusive ASEAN community as we continue to support the aspirations of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Blueprint 2025 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education.”

AMS is designed to provide young, talented and deserving ASEAN nationals, especially those from the lower income segment, with full scholarships to pursue their undergraduate education in prestigious universities outside their own countries, but within the ASEAN region. For the first intake this year, a total of three scholarships were offered, which will progressively be increased to 10 a year by 2025 and thereafter.

The scholarship which will involve an investment of some RM5 million for the initial intakes up to 2025, is part of Maybank’s continued commitment to invest in the future of ASEAN youth through education. Details of the three scholarship recipients are as below:

“As the newest Entity Associated with ASEAN, Maybank Foundation continues to advance financial inclusiveness, enable social mobility through the ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship programme, as well as promote the region’s identity and heritage,” said H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi.

In commemoration of the 55th anniversary of ASEAN, Maybank also unveiled a Maybank Women Eco-Weavers book as part of the Bank’s effort to showcase the art of textile weaving and heritage of ASEAN. The Maybank Women Eco-Weavers programme aims to preserve the art of textile weaving while empowering women from marginalised communities across ASEAN. To date, Maybank has invested over RM11.4 million and trained 1,133 weavers under the programme, which runs in four countries namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Zamzamzairani added that Maybank is committed to drive programmes such as the ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship and Maybank Women Eco-Weavers to unearth new talents and spur economic growth as well as uplift the wellbeing of regional communities.

“As a leading financial institution in the region, we strive to enrich the communities where we operate. This commitment is deeply rooted in our mission to humanise financial services and is in line with the Bank’s sustainability commitment under M25, to improve the lives of 1 million households across ASEAN by 2025.”

The ASEAN-Maybank Scholarship and Maybank Women Eco-Weavers programmes are key ASEAN-level initiatives undertaken by Maybank Foundation, which was made an accredited ASEAN entity in 2021.
