Financial Check-Up: A Simple Way to Keep Your Finances Healthy

Maintaining physical health through regular medical check-ups has become a habit for many people. But have you ever done a financial check-up?

Just as your physical health needs to be monitored regularly, your financial health also needs to be evaluated from time to time. Changes in income, lifestyle, and growing family needs can affect your financial situation without you realizing it. By conducting a financial check-up, you can determine whether your current financial situation is still on track to achieve your future financial goals.

Here are several indicators you can use to assess your financial health:

  1. Check Your Monthly Cash Flow
The first step is to evaluate your cash flow. Calculate your total monthly income, then compare it with your total expenses. Ideally, you should still have some funds left over that can be allocated toward savings, investments, or building an emergency fund. If your expenses consistently exceed your income, this is a sign that you may need to reassess your spending habits and prioritize your expenses.

  2.

  3. Make Sure Your Bills Are Always Paid on Time
Paying bills on schedule is one indicator of financial discipline. Late payments can not only result in penalties but may also disrupt your cash flow and, for certain types of obligations, affect your credit history. Creating a payment schedule or using reminders can help ensure that all your monthly obligations remain under control.

  4.

  5. Keep Your Total Monthly Installments Within a Safe Limit
Having installment payments is not necessarily a problem, as long as the amount remains within your financial means.
As a general guideline, many financial planners recommend keeping total monthly installment payments at no more than around 30–35% of your monthly income. This allows you to maintain sufficient room for daily expenses, savings, and unexpected costs. With the Manage Credit Card feature in the M2U ID App, you can easily monitor your Maybank Credit Card transactions on a regular basis..

  6.

  7. Make Sure You Have an Emergency Fund
Life is full of unexpected possibilities, such as job loss, medical expenses, or other urgent financial needs. Therefore, an emergency fund is an important foundation of financial health. Keep your emergency funds in a secure financial instrument, such as Maybank Tabungan MyPlan/MyPlan iB. You can save regularly through an automatic debit system, so the funds are automatically transferred into your Maybank savings account.

  8.

  9. Have Adequate Financial Protection
In addition to saving and investing, financial protection is also an important part of financial planning. Risks such as illness, accidents, or the loss of a primary breadwinner can have a significant impact on a family's financial situation.

Having appropriate protection, such as health or life insurance based on your needs, can help reduce the financial burden when such risks occur. Allianz MyProtection Simple life insurance can be an option for your financial protection. The application process is easy and can be completed anytime through the M2U ID App.

  10.

Through a financial check-up, you can assess whether your cash flow is healthy, your bills are well managed, your installment payments remain within a safe limit, you have sufficient emergency funds, and your financial protection is adequate. This can help you make wiser financial decisions and build a more secure and well-planned financial future.

Time to Calibrate Your Finances: Recognize, Reduce & Take Control
By: Vindy Tanza, Market Strategist

Entering a new period can be an opportunity to build better habits, including better financial management. With so many needs and the convenience of making transactions, small expenses made repeatedly can cause our finances to drift without a clear direction.

That’s why conducting a financial calibration can be a simple way to get your finances back on track. It doesn’t mean you have to stop enjoying life or cut back on every expense. Rather, it’s about taking another look at how your money is being used and making sure every financial decision remains aligned with your needs and goals.

  • Financial Calibration Doesn’t Mean Being Cheap
Managing your finances doesn’t necessarily mean adopting a frugal lifestyle. A financial plan that is too restrictive can actually be harder to follow consistently. What matters more is having a financial pattern that is well-planned and suited to your circumstances. You can still buy the things you want, as long as your spending is planned and does not interfere with your essential needs or future financial goals.

To get started, try these three simple steps: Recognize, Reduce, and Take Control.

  • Recognize: Understand Your Financial Patterns
The first step is to understand where your money goes each month by regularly tracking your finances. Start by reviewing all your income and expenses. Pay attention to regular expenses such as bills, transportation, food, and household needs. Then, take a look at more flexible spending, such as shopping, dining out, entertainment, and various subscription services.

The goal is not to look for mistakes, but to recognize your spending patterns. Small expenses may seem insignificant when viewed individually. However, when repeated throughout the month, they can add up to a substantial amount. By understanding these patterns, you can identify which expenses are truly important and which ones can be postponed.

  • Reduce: Prioritize Your Spending
Once you understand your spending patterns, the next step isn’t simply to "reduce" your expenses, but to determine your priorities. Ask yourself: Do I really need this? How often will I use it? Can I put it off for now?

Not every non-essential expense needs to be eliminated. However, some expenses can be reduced without significantly affecting your quality of life. For example, subscriptions that are rarely used, impulse purchases, or shopping habits that could actually be planned in advance.

The impact of the money you save may not always be immediately visible. However, the additional room in your budget can eventually give you more flexibility to meet future needs.

  • Take Control: Set Financial Goals
After reducing less-essential expenses, the next step is to make sure your money is being used according to plan. Create a simple plan for how your income will be allocated each month. Set aside funds for regular expenses, lifestyle spending, savings, an emergency fund, and other financial goals.

It doesn’t have to be perfect from the start. What matters is having clear boundaries and direction, while recognizing that not every dollar needs to be allocated rigidly. Leaving some funds unallocated can actually give you greater flexibility when unexpected expenses arise—and that, in itself, is part of healthy financial control.

You can also set several goals based on different time horizons, such as saving for an upcoming vacation, building an emergency fund, preparing for education expenses, buying a home, or building long-term assets. This way, your money doesn’t simply "remain" at the end of the month; it has a purpose from the beginning.

  • Small Progress Is Essential
Financial calibration is not about changing all your habits at once. Small changes that can be maintained consistently are often easier to sustain. By recognizing your spending patterns, reducing expenses that provide less value, and taking greater control of how your money is allocated, you can create a healthier and more flexible financial situation.

Money that was previously spent on less-productive expenses can gradually be redirected toward building a stronger financial foundation, preparing for future needs, and supporting long-term asset growth.

Ultimately, healthy finances are not simply about how much you earn, but also about how you give purpose to every rupiah you spend.

Ask the Expert

After Successfully Calibrating Your Finances, How Can You Allocate Funds Previously Spent on Unproductive Expenses to Better Support Future Asset Growth?
By: Vindy Tanza, Market Strategist

Once you have calibrated your finances and established your financial goals, the next question is: Where should those funds be allocated?
Before choosing an investment instrument, it is important to understand your financial situation, goals, investment time horizon, and appropriate risk level.

  • Build a Foundation Before Pursuing Growth
Before investing, make sure your essential needs are covered and that you have sufficient emergency funds that are easily accessible. We never know when an unexpected financial need may arise. Having an adequate emergency fund can therefore help keep your investment plan on track without requiring you to liquidate your investments at an unfavorable time.

With a stronger financial cushion, you have more room to deal with unexpected short-term needs without disrupting your investment plans. Once your basic needs and emergency fund are covered, surplus funds can gradually be directed toward other investment instruments.

  • Determine Your Goals and Time Horizon.
Make sure every amount of money has a clear purpose and a defined timeframe for when it will be needed. Funds that will be used in the near future should naturally be treated differently from funds intended for goals five, ten, or even twenty years from now.

For example, funds intended for short-term needs should generally be invested in stable and liquid instruments. Meanwhile, for longer-term goals, you may consider instruments with higher growth potential.

So, investing is not about asking, “Which instrument is the best?” but rather, “Which instrument is most suitable for my investment goals?”

  • Align Investments with Your Risk Profile
After matching your investment goals with the appropriate instruments, the next factor to consider is your ability and comfort level when it comes to taking risks. Every investment instrument has different characteristics.I generally divide risk profiles into two aspects: age and knowledge.

The younger a person is, the greater their ability to consider higher-risk investment instruments compared with someone who is older. However, this should also be balanced with their level of knowledge. The more familiar someone is with an investment instrument, the more comfortable they will generally be with understanding and accepting its risks.

That is why it is important to remain open to learning about different investment instruments. The more instruments we understand, the more options we have for creating a diversified investment portfolio.

Investing is ultimately about managing risk. Understanding the risks that may arise is therefore more important than simply focusing on potential returns. When risks are managed effectively, the potential for returns can follow.

  • Diversification
If the first two steps are carried out properly, your portfolio should naturally become diversified. For short-term investment goals, such as needs within one year and emergency funds, funds can generally be placed in instruments such as time deposits, money market mutual funds, or other instruments that tend to be relatively stable and liquid.

For medium-term goals, such as needs within two to three years, funds can be allocated to fixed-income instruments or bonds. For longer-term goals, funds may be invested in instruments with higher levels of risk and potentially higher returns.

Diversification is essentially not a strategy for chasing the highest possible returns. Rather, it is a form of protection against unpredictable risks while ensuring that funds are allocated according to their intended purpose.

No one can guarantee which investment instrument will perform best in the future. By spreading funds across different types of assets, we are not betting on a single outcome. Instead, we are creating a hedge or form of protection in case one investment does not perform as expected.

Through the M2U ID App, Customers can start investing in products such as mutual funds, SBN (government securities), and Pegadaian Gold Savings, depending on their needs and the characteristics of each investment instrument.

Customers can also utilize the 360 Digital Wealth feature to help assess their financial situation and plan their financial goals in a more structured way.

Most importantly, investment choices should always be aligned with your financial needs, risk profile, and the goals you want to achieve.
